After SPM '00 (the education certificate exam)—marking independence day from school and all the days that follow forever—I spent the December working as a merchandiser for F&N Coca-Cola; a temp job to keep myself awake during the holidays. I went from store to store, at least four in a day and spending two hours in each, to check inventory, open boxes and cartons, fill up the shelves, arrange the displays, and help empty customers' wallets for my wares, perpetually smiling as I go.
My colleagues and myself occasionally meet at the office, but we all go separate ways, alone. My only all-day companion is a clipboard, where I keep my itenerary schedule and a piece of paper where I jot things down, test my ink flow, smear thumb prints, and doodle and scribble.
As a merchandiser, I must always keep myself busy and looking for things to do; not just for the supervisor's approval, but so that I won't have to stand around and turn into a people-watching dork. At times when idle, or when I get bored, I'd naturally begin scrawling on my clipboard.
